The Man who saw TOMMORROW
Like a lot of peers, the Asiad in 1982 was a
turning point for Dhoot. People from that generation would have more than
a faint recollection of Videocon’s Picture in Picture (PIP) facility where
two channels could be viewed at one time. It might seem funny in today’s
context, but was a breakthrough for that era. For a
man who leads a group that garners over $3 billion worth of revenues,
Venugopal Dhoot is remarkably accessible. When I call the Videocon Group
chairman on his mobile, the ganapathy caller tune is what greets me.
Dhoot is quick to understand the reason for the
meeting and says 6 pm the next evening works well with him. Quick decision
maker, I say to myself as I decide to put my questions
together
It’s the Mumbai
monsoon at its best as I make way to Dhoot’s office in the historic Fort
area in South Mumbai. The building is new and it makes for interesting
comparison with other structures that are largely pre-Independence. While
the din in the area is almost unbearable, Dhoot’s office on the second
floor is quite the opposite.
Sprawling it surely is at over 3,000 square feet
and I can’t help but think of the average tenement size in India’s
commercial capital. Dhoot is a stickler for time and at 6 pm he is there
to say hello. My apprehension on meeting a man who could be tired after a
hard day is laid to rest as he looks very relaxed and shakes hands rather
warmly.
I discover much
later, of course, that he is done for the day and long working hours are
almost a thing of the past for the man. “You know, business is actually
like a circus where an artist moves from one trapeze to another. If you
fail, you will fall,” says the 53-year-old as he sips his tea. Dhoot is an
informal man with simple tastes when it comes to most things.
The office, for its size, is not ostentatious with
simple white colours. The circus analogy sinks in and I start to grasp its
meaning when he interjects. “If you like your business, you will like it
for every living moment,” he adds.
THE GITA AND WORK Dhoot’s relaxed demeanour gets
me thinking on how he balances work and home. After all, it must be a busy
work schedule and I proceed to ask him that. "I have brought in a host of
professional managers for my businesses and I have a lot of time on my
hands," he says with a broad smile. A far cry indeed from the past where a maniacal update on progress was the order of the day and a hands-on approach was mandatory. “At times, I have stood outside factories and ensured that even dispatches were made on time and on schedule,” he recalls with almost wicked humour. Of course, that grounding has helped today and Dhoot admits as much. Religion and philosophy are huge components of Dhoot’s life today. I ask him gingerly how that took place and he lets me in that a tutor was employed to teach him Sanskrit. Pious he surely is as I discover to my astonishment when he rattles off verses from the Bhagavad Gita effortlessly. The truth is he knows it completely and is able to relate parts of the Gita to actual events in life. Unsurprisingly, his tilt towards the Gita was when he was going through a bit of tough phase in his business. “I spend two hours everyday reading the Gita,” says the man. That is three chapters everyday which means he takes around a week to finish the text. There’s a lot Dhoot has learnt from the Gita and I allow my jaw to drop when he says he knows the text word for word. “The Bhagavad Gita has taught me the importance of work and how not to get attached to it. It has also helped me to relax and reduce stress levels,” he says. The levels of involvement with the Gita are apparent when Dhoot says he delivers lectures on it at several institutions THE WONDER
